This Kickstarter project from Isolana London brings us something completely new. It's not so much in the layout of the wallet, but the look of it. Isolana have developed a technique that allows printing onto leather. I won't pretend to understand how that works, but the result is that they are offering a range of entirely customisable wallets, where any photo or image can be printed directly onto the wallet, meaning you can design your very own unique wallet.
Isolana is based in London, and in true artisan style on an island in the Thames itself. Forrest Skerman-Stevenson, one of the main people behind the brand, comes from a family with a long history of leather craftmanship. His Father invented a technique for printing on leather back in 1999, and it has been used to create products for many major brands. Forrest and the rest of the Isolana team are now seeking to open up that privilege to everyone to be able to create their own unique custom printed wallets.
Isolana offer three wallet styles that can be chosen to customise. Each wallet is individually manufactured in London from genuine vegetable tanned Italian Leather. There are four colours of leather to choose from (which will show on any parts not printed on), which are black, dark brown, light brown and cream. Each wallet can be embossed with initials as well to complete the personalised touch.
The first style available, the Cardholder, is the most minimal design. It is a traditional cardholder design with two slots on the front side as well as a middle slip pocket suitable for folded notes. It is the back side of this particular wallet that can be customised with any image you choose. The Cardholder has space for around 6 cards as well as some notes.
The second style, the Slim, offers slightly more in the way of storage and customisation. It is a folded wallet with 4 pockets, two on each side of the inside. There is no cash slot as such, keeping it slim and minimal, but cash can be folded and stored in any one of the pockets easily. The Slim can hold around 8 cards and some cash, and appears to stay pretty minimalist with that amount in it. The Slim can be printed on either the inside or outside, allowing for more freedom in how you choose to customise it.
The final design, the Billfold, is much like a traditional billfold wallet. it consists of a cash slot on the top allowing for bills to be easily stored and accessed unfolded. The Billfold boasts 4 slot pockets on each side, 2 of which are easy access, as well as side-access hidden pockets behind these main slots. All in all the Billfold is capable of holding well in excess of 10 cards (though why, why would you want that much in your pocket!?) and no shortage of notes either. Just like the Slim, the Billfold can be printed on either side, and with the size of this one you really would have quite the canvas to customise!
The only question that remains is, what would you print onto it?
Isolana are well on their way to achieving funding, and prices range from £20 for the Cardholder to £80 for the Billfold. To find out more or to pledge, visit the Isolana Wallets Kickstarter page. You can also check out their video below.
